arnoldo garcía: rebel/rebelaya | Based on “Bi-d-ro-he” poem.

Shahed Chowdhury performs the poem “Bi-d-ro-he” by Kazi Nazrul Islam.

“Bi-d-ro-he” means rebel.
Here’s my version based on Chowdhury’s explanation:

“Rebel/Rebelaya”

Rebel Rebel Rebel

Rebelaya

Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
Your mind is taller
than the Himalayas

Himalaya
Himalaya
Himalaya
You’re smaller
than the mind
of the Rebel Rebel Rebel/Rebelaya

The rebel sits
atop the thrones of gods & goddesses
The rebel blasts off into the sky
Paints on the heavens:
liberty
justice
working class love and power!

Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
She scribbles graffiti
all over the Milky Way:
Revolution & life!
Death to death!
Death to exploitation!
Death to jails, prisons & the dust of small minds!
Death to suffering
Death to oblivion
No forgetfulness for our martyrs & mothers!

Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
Your kind
is taller
than the Himalayas

Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya

Your mind and heart
has room for everyone
including the Himalayas

Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
Rebel Rebel Rebel
Rebelaya
You’ve become

The mind of humanity

The heart of the Himalayas
